These seeds have all of the necessary certifications to guarantee a high-quality plot. With dedication and gardening knowledge, you’ll have your own small plot and your own delicious home-grown products in no time.

What are Gardening Seeds?

In this case, gardening seeds are those designed to be harvested, such as vegetables or “horticultural” seeds.

Traditionally, crops have been grown all over the world, with each region making the most of its conditions to specialize in fruit and vegetables that grow best in each climate, becoming traditional crops.

Types of Garden Seeds

You can start gardening using many different methods; clones, cuttings, bulbs and seeds. In La Huerta’s catalogue, you can find seeds with ECO certifications, guaranteeing that the seeds come from plots grown using eco-friendly techniques and practices, without any chemical herbicides and pesticides, or any other unauthorized agents for growing food.

Almost all of the seeds in La Huerta’s catalogue have ECO certifications, such as our Black Beauty Zucchinis, Crimson Sweet Watermelons, or our tomato selection.

There are different types of seeds in this section, including:

Legumes: these seeds stabilize nitrogen in soil and grow their fruit along a vine, such as Helda Beans or Round Peas.

Cruciferous: these vegetables contain large amounts of nutrients and natural vitamins. Some, such as glucosinolates, have proven to be highly efficient at preventing cancer. Within this group, you can find seeds such as our National Radish.

Cucurbits: these plants include berries usually grown during hotter areas or during the summer. Certain types of melon also belong to this family, such as our “Piel de Sapo” (toad skin) Melons, Crimson Sweet Melons, or the Black Beauty zucchini.

Herb Seeds

Any respectable garden has a spot designated for herbs, mainly used to add flavor to certain dishes. The team at La Huerta has chosen a series of spices and herbs with various uses both in cooking and other aspects of life.

Some examples are:

Genovese Basil: this is the preferred herb of Italian chefs, used to make the most amazing pesto sauce. These seeds have protected designation of origin, and grow with large leaves with lightly serrated edges.

Giant Parsley: this is a herb that’s used in recipes all around the world, with large lobed leaves and an intense, potent aroma.

Thyme: traditional to Mediterranean climates, this plant belongs to the labiate family, used a lot in cooking and known for its medicinal qualities, including it’s use as a digestive aid, antiseptic and as an invigorant.

Lavender : although it’s not recommended as a cooking ingredient, lavender’s essential oils and aromatic terpenes are highly valued for cosmetics and perfume making – it makes up the base of many creams and pomades.

Uses

Vegetables, fruits and herbs have had many different uses since the dawn of time, every since human beings became hunter-nomads, and collectors, right up until we established ourselves and began to plant crops and settle down.

One of the most basic things that come to mind is cooking and recipes, where even herbs can be used to complement and add flavours to dishes that might be bland otherwise.

Auto sufficiency:

The possibility of growing your own food and not having to depend on stores and supermarkets is quite an enticing option for many growers.

Aromatherapy:

This form of alternative medicine is based on using aromatic essences that can help to improve moods and psychological and physical wellbeing. This type of treatment uses essential oils or other products made from aromatic plants, and can be used topically, internally, inhaled or via aromatized water to help treat different ailments.

Plant therapy:

Plant therapy is a practice in which gardening is used as therapy to treat certain psychological issues, and is also often used with people with psychomotor issues, elderly individuals and kids. These activities are designed to improve quality of life via coming into contact with the earth and actively growing plants.

Plant Association:

This is the practice of combining two or more different types of crop or plant in the same plot. This allows both species to cooperate and create a symbiotic relationship between the two. For example, you can associate your normal vegetable and fruit crops with herbs that help keep insects away or produce beneficial nutrients in the soil.

However, keep in mind that not all plants are good for each other. Cannabis plants are also grown using this technique to keep insects away and strengthen your plants’ defense system.

For example, white clovers are the ideal garden friend for your cannabis plants; they create a living surface that keeps insects away, retains humidity and stops weeds from growing. Lavender can also deter insects, acting as a sort of botanical traffic light, and basil is especially recommended for deterring aphids.

Tomato Selection

The team at La Huerta has chosen a series of tomato strains for gardeners, so you can find the ideal strain for you, whether it's out of a preference for taste or growing conditions.

Coraçao de Boi Tomato: this tomato is quite large, with a firm and juicy consistency. It grows better in warm areas with average temperatures of 20°. They need to be sat right in the sun and protected from the wind. This plant needs frequent watering, as it needs quite a lot of water.

Muchamiel Tomato: traditionally, this tomato works wonderfully for coastal gardeners. It's usually sown in spring, and harvested towards the end of the summer or sometimes the start of autumn. This tomato is meaty, with a fresh flavour and amazing aroma.

Marmande Tomato: large vegetables, few seeds and a lot of juice. This strain needs warm areas and fertile soil. It's ideal for eating raw, and has a short maturation period, so it's ready to harvest earlier than other strains.

Chili Pepper Selection

Don’t take these peppers lightly! The list of chili peppers chosen by the team at La Huerta have enough Scoville Heat Units to heat up even the most expert grower and consumer!

In our catalogue you can find Chocolate Habanero seeds, similar to normal Habaneros but with a fruitier flavour, with a total of 400,000 SHU. We also have Orange Habaneros, that can have between 150,000 to 350,000 SHU.

This scale measures the amount of times the spice needs to be dissolved in water to eliminate its effect, For example, the Small Red Cherry chili pepper has 5000 SHU – these small, cherry-looking peppers are considered “moderately spicy”.

On the other side of the scale we have the Carolina Reaper, with 2,000,000 SHU. This pepper almost looks demonic, and is considered the hottest pepper in the world, with various Guinness World Records. All available for the most dedicated gardeners.

Gourmet Flowers

Here at La Huerta you can also find extremely high quality, beautiful flowers designed for decorating or eating in salads or as a side dish to other plates, such as pansies or marigolds.

Types of Crop

Any gardener can tell you that the main ingredient, apart from quality seeds, should be a nutrient-rich soil. In our soil and substrate section you can find soil that suits your needs best, or if you prefer using a different growing method, we also cater to indoor gardeners with our hydroponics system.

Another important actor is fertilizing so that your plants can get the nutrients they need. La Huerta has a wide range of fertilizers designed to take on these situations – we even have a search feature so you can find exactly what you’re looking for.

Insects tend to be one of the most head-wrecking things for any gardener or farmer. To solve this issue, take a look at our insecticide and plant health section and get rid of any insect of fungi infestations.

Flower pots, stakes, tanks, watering systems, growing tools, even materials needed to build your own greenhouse – all available in our gardening accessories section.

Everything you need for a healthy, productive garden – here at La Huerta Grow Shop.
