How to Get the Most Out of Your Weed

In this post we’re going to go through how to get the most out of your weed, to the last gram or leaf. From extracting trichomes, to making the most out of your cannabis to make a delicious cannabis recipe. Make the most of your hard work and months of dedication in taking care of your cannabis plants.

Table of Contents

If you grow cannabis then you definitely know that it’s common to find leftover small buds or other trimmings around such as bits of leaf covered in bud trichomes, buds in the end of forgotten stashes, or maybe even full buds that you just didn’t quite like enough to smoke.

What to Do with Leftover Cannabis Trimmings

Making the most of your weed essentially involves extracting their active components for various different uses. When you have delicious buds on your hands it can be harder to extract their properties due to their quality, but if you have leftover trimmings, small buds and stems on hand you can either use them up or throw them out. Your harvesting leftovers are as essential as your yield!

Some growers smoke their flowers, others vaporize them, some never use tobacco, others like to make various types of concentrates etc. The reality when it comes to leftover trimmings is different: they’re not high quality buds. They don’t usually contain the same amount of trichomes, same size in flowers and sometimes they lack aroma and flavour, or they’re simply leaves close to the buds that you’ve accumulated while trimming.

Making cannabos concentrates
There are many different homemade concentrates you can make from your cannabis harvest.

What Extracts Can You Make from Weed?

There are many different extraction methods used to extract the main active components of cannabis and make extracts. The method used is going to depend on your material, the quantity or quality of the cannabis extract you’re looking to obtain, the amount of money you’re willing to invest in extraction equipment etc. Keeping these factors in mind, you’ll need to choose between various different methods.

Regarding extract types, there are two main groups; non-solvent extracts and solvent extracts.

Non-solvent Concentrates

Concentrates called non-solvent extracts are those in which you don’t need any substances to dissolve the resin, rather it’s done by mechanical means.

These types of extracts can be obtained using different methods:

Dry Extracts

Dry extracts are a traditional type of cannabis extract that’s based on separating trichomes from your plants without needing any type of solvent. All you need are cannabis flowers, a mesh and enough movement to get the trichomes moving and off the plant.

Although this may be a more passive method, this is the type of extract that you can get from the last compartment in specific types of cannabis grinders. We recommend freezing your flowers and leftovers before doing this type of extract in order to obtain large amounts of hash.

At La Huerta Grow Shop you can find various devices and accessories for making dry extracts.

Shake Me, an affordable and easy to use resin extraction device.

The dry resin extractor, Shake Me, is affordable and small, although it works well enough to produce a small ball of hash in no time. It has two compartments; the upper one is a screw on piece where you’ll need to place your flowers or leftover trimmings. The lower part has a pressure lid and this is where the trichomes are stored.

It’s easy to use; place your weed inside, close it and store it in the fridge for over 2 hours (24-48h provides much better results). When frozen, take it our and shake it upside down in order to shake the trichomes towards the bottom of the shaker.

The following is a video in which you can see exactly how to use the Shake Me dry-extractor:

The Polenmaker – this is a best-seller when it comes to dry extracts.

The Polenmaker works in a similar way to the Shake Me, although it’s bigger and higher in quality. It has a 90 mm diameter and is 180 mm tall, allowing you to extract resin from a larger quantity of cannabis and leftovers.

The methacrylate container allows you to see your cannabis and pollen while extracting it without needing to open it. The benefit of small extractors like these is that you can place them in the freezer with your cannabis in order to obtain larger amounts; trichomes degrade less at lower temperatures.

This is one of the best-selling extractor devices at La Huerta Grow Shop. Thanks to this extractor, anyone can make their own hash at home in no time at all.

Secret Box 150 – next level extracts.

The Secret Box 150 is a step further regarding dry extracts. It’s designed to hold more cannabis and produce more hash; this automatic resin extractor has a 225 micron mesh (for even higher quality, we also stock 100 micron models for even higher quality).

A small motor turns the barrel, through which the trichomes are filtered and end up at the bottom of the Secret Box. Once they’re at the bottom you can easily remove the barrel and collect all of the hash from the bottom.

In order to get the most out of the Secret Box 150, you’ll need to freeze your cannabis just like with the other two models, although instead of placing the extractor inside your freezer you should put your weed and trimmings in plastic Ziploc bags and then in the freezer.

It takes between 1 and 8 minutes to complete an extraction cycle; you can leave it for more time, but this makes for less quality because the flowers and trimmings will begin to break up and filter into the hash.

  • Balance between quality and quantity.

The golden rule when it comes to all dry extraction methods (and iceolator extraction methods) is that the longer you extract for, the more your material is going to break up and the more cannabinoids will end up degrading. We recommend that, although you may obtain more yield with more time, you should stick to faster extracts for higher quality results.

If you do a few short extraction rounds you can achieve varying qualities of hash in the same amount, allowing you to distinguish the highest quality extract.

If you’re more interested in quantity rather than quality you can always go for longer or combine various different qualities when finished the process.

How to make hash
Dry hash, which can be obtained in varying qualities, is generally a non-solvent extract that produces large yields.

Rosin

Rosin is easy and fast to make. The results may vary quite a bit depending on the material used, although they always contain high amounts of cannabinoids. If you use good, “fresh” material the resulting extract should also be high in terpenes. This is why Rosin is one of the most-used extract technologies of the past few years.

In order to make Rosin all you need is a rosin press and filters to get rid of any impurities. You can make Rosin from buds, dry extracts, iceolator extract and even THCA if you use the right materials and right microns.

Rosin press
Making rosin is a fast, easy process although there are many different techniques and processes. You’ll need a rosin press and filter bags in order to get rid of impurities and to obtain the best possible quality.

Water Extraction

Although water extraction or ice extraction isn’t as traditional as dry extraction methods, they’ve been around for over 20 years and it’s quite common to find this type of extract in clubs, dispensaries and Coffee Shops all over the world, including Spain and the US.

This technique is based on the same idea that trichomes break under the cold and are separated from leaves and buds via movement. The main difference is that the medium used is cold water.

In order to make this type of concentrate, you need to use meshes of different sizes in order to separate trichomes from your material; leaves, leftover flowers etc. This allows you to extract various different qualities of what’s known as “water hash” or “bubble hash”.

Meshes and Extraction Kits for Ice-o-Lator

Regardless of the materials being used, follow these steps when making ice-o-lator hash:

  • Cool your material down using ice and water.
  • Move the material around so that the trichomes fall off.
  • Filter the trichomes using meshes of different sizes in order to get rid of any impurities and obtain varying qualities of hash.
  • Dry the hash (the ideal way to do this is to use a freeze dryer in order to get rid of any leftover moisture in your hash).

The cooling down and movement process can be done in two ways:

  1. Use a bucket for the water, ice and weed and move it manually using a stick or another stirring device that isn’t too brusque.
  2. Use an ice washer (Resinator) for the water, hash and ice and simply turn it on.

Check out our post on How to Make Water Hash, Step by Step in order to learn how to do it from start to finish.

You’ll always need to have thin micron meshes for filtering hash, regardless of the chosen method.

Homemade water hash
La Huerta Grow Shop has everything needed in order to make your own Iceolator Water Hash of high quality.

Ice-o-Lator Resinator water hash extraction kit, comfortable and easy to use:

Pure Factory’s Resinator Kit is made up of:

It’s incredibly easy to use following these steps:

  1. Place the resonator on a high surface, for example on a table with a bucket beside it on the ground.
  2. Place the meshes within the bucket. The thinnest one goes first (with the smallest holes), then the medium one(s), ending with the one with the largest holes. The largest micron mesh (220) should be on the top in order to get rid of the actual plant material first.
  3. If you-re using more mesh bags to obtain more varying qualities, remember that the smallest one needs to be placed in first (closest to the bottom of the bucket) and the largest one should be last (closest to the top of the bucket).
  4. Fill the resonator halfway with water and pour in some ice cubes, Turn the resonator on in order to cool the water to about 2 – 4 °C. 5 minutes should be enough.
  5. In the meantime, fill the pyramid bag with your cannabis or leftovers (each bag holds about half a kilo).
  6. Place the bag in the resonator and turn it on for 3 – 8 minutes (you can put it in for longer, but remember that more time means less quality.)
  7. Turn the Resinator off and squeeze the bag to remove any water and leftover trichomes.
  8. Take the hose and place it in the bucket with the meshes already in and let it empty. Next, remove the bag at the very top (the one that should be sitting within the other ones) and squeeze it to get the water out. This bag contains the remains of your material, no hash.
  9. Remove the second mesh bag and move it to train any water. You should have some hash ready here to dry. Do the same thing with the rest of the bags.
  10. Once you have all of your extract out, you should use a freeze dryer to dry the has completely.
Make hash
Making homemade iceolator is easy, although you’ll need filter bags in order to get rid of any vegetable material and separate it from the trichomes. You can use a washer in order to make the process easier.

At La Huerta Grow Shop you can find a wide variety of various-sized filter bags for hash extraction in different microns in order to make ice-o-lator of varying qualities.

Barcelona hash
There are many ways of making hash. Iceolator is highly recommended as you don’t have to use any solvents, and it conserves terpenes also; highly potent.
Ice-o-lator – Small Super Mini Crystal 25 microns
  • This 25 micron filter bag allows you to catch the smallest of trichomes.
  • The perfect addition to your filter bag pack.

Keep in mind that in the two filter bag kits, you’ll end up losing a lot of the smaller trichomes as one is used to remove the material, leaving the other for the trichomes.

In order to catch the most amount of trichomes possible, we recommend using an additional 25 micron bag and additional medium sized bag in between to separate different qualities of hash. Plus, if you only use small micron filter bags it may take too long.

This means that you can mix the high quality extracts obtained from 120, 90 and 70 micron bags with the leftover trichomes from your 25 micron filter bag.

Drying Ice-O-Lator Hash

When it comes to drying your hash, this is one of the few times that you can actually mess up. When making water hash you need to dry it properly so that no leftover moisture is leftover. This can cause fungi and rot which can ruin all of your hard work. You’ll need to place your moist hash into the fridge so that it hardens a bit and so that it can dry out slowly.

You can also dry them using a freeze dry system. When done right a freeze dryer can help you to obtain professional-quality hash.

If you don’t have a freeze dryer, you should put the hash through a sieve to air it out and then leave it for about a week in a dark area so that it loses all moisture.

Solvent Concentrates

Solvent concentrates are those in which substances are used to dissolve and extract the content from your plant’s trichomes. There are various different types, which are as follows:

BHO (Butane Hash or Honey Oil)

Concentrates made using gas need a little extra care and safety; working with gas can be dangerous as it’s incredibly inflammable. When making BHO make sure to use protective eye wear and other protective methods such as fire-resistant coverings, rubber gloves etc.

There are two ways to make a concentrate using gas.

  • Open circuit: this method is cheaper in as far as materials, but you lose a lot of gas and you can’t rid the concentrate of the gas from the impurities.
  • Closed circuit: in this method you can get rid of any impurities and extract the gas and use it again. It’s also a lot safer and cleaner, allowing you to clean any leftover gas without producing what’s known as “mystery oil”.

There are various ways to get rid of leftover gas in your concentrate:

  • Using a vacuum pump and chamber – more affordable.
  • Using a vacuum oven and pump – more professional and safe.

Open circuit BHO Extractors

BHO Roller Extractor

The BHO Roller Extractor is one of the best-sellers in as far as open-circuit extraction methods, and it’s definitely one of the most used methods. They’re made out of clinical-grade steel and come in three sizes:

  • M150, 15 cm for 10 grams of cannabis approx.
  • L200, 20 cm for 16 grams of cannabis approx.
  • XL300, 30cm for 20 grams of cannabis approx.

It’s pretty simple and easy to use, but you’ll need to take extreme care; you’re working with gas that is being expelled outwards. We recommend using Colibri Gas, a high quality and clean gas that’s perfect for this type of extraction method. Another important thing to keep in mind is that you should wear protective gloves, as excess cold can actually burn the skin.

buy BHO
Do you know what BHO is? It’s a cannabis concentrate ideal for dabbing due to how pure it its and its high cannabinoid content.

How to Use the Roller Extractor

  • Fill your roller extractor so that the cannabis is slightly compact, but not too much; you want the gas to pass through all of the cannabis in the tube.
  • Place the Roller Extractor in your freezer for 24h at the least.
  • Use a Pyrex glass tray for the resulting concentrate.
  • It’s easy to use; press the gas against the bottom of the BHO Roller Extractor, keeping the outlet of the tube centimetres above the tray you’re using. Use all of the gas at once and wait until the last drop has fallen out.
  • The proportion is about one bottle of gas per 25-30g cannabis.

Closed-circuit BHO Extractors

Closed circuit BHO extractors are some of the most used devices in recent years, as they allow you to safely and cleanly obtain large amounts of concentrate. These types of extractors allow you to reuse your gas as well as get rid of the impurity’s leftover in the gas (commonly known as mystery oil), which allows for a much cleaner concentrate.

At La Huerta Grow Shop we stock closed circuit extractors in various sizes: 150 g, 350 g, 550 g, 1100 g, 3300 g, and 4400 g.

Purifying Gas from BHO

Once you have your concentrate, you’ll need to get rid of the gas leftover inside it. If you look closely, you’ll see bubbles, which is evidence that the gas is evaporating. Some growers heat the tray using the bane mare method, making sure that it doesn’t go above 30 – 40 °C so that no terpenes are lost.

Leave your concentrate in the dark and well-protected from insects and dirt.

When there are no more bubbles, you can move on to the next phase, for which you’re going to need a heating plate, a vacuum pump and a vacuum chamber in order to extract any remaining gas.

These three elements can be substituted with a vacuum oven and extractor. Vacuum ovens are a much more professional way to get rid of gas from your BHO concentrate.

Plus, you can use vacuum ovens to dry out BHO more than once and you can precisely control temperatures and times, as well as using them to get rid of any gas from various round of BHO all at once.

Affordable Resin Extraction Kits

At La Huerta Grow Shop we have a BHO extraction kit called the Cannabis Oil Extraction Kit, which comes with everything you need to get a clean, high quality concentrate.

This kit contains:

If you already have a BHO extractor, we have a BHO Gas Extraction kit designed to get rid of any leftover gas in your BHO.

Contains:

  • Robinair 75 L/min vacuum pump
  • Glass vacuum extractor.
  • 2m Silicone tubing.
  • Clamps.
  • 2 free Colibri Gas bottles.

Professional BHO Extraction and Gas Kit

If you want to make your own professional BHO extracts, you’ll need to use a closed circuit (they can go from 150 to 4400 grams) in order to extract BHO safely and cleanly.

In order to get rid of any leftover gas, the most professional method is to use a vacuum oven. La Huerta Grow Shop stocks vacuum ovens from 25 L to 53 L.

Once you’ve extracted and cleaned your BHO concentrate, you should have a look at our BHO pipe and BHO vaporizer section to enjoy it as much as possible. BHO tends to have high amounts of cannabinoids and terpenes, but make sure to purge it of any leftover gas or else it may be toxic to consume.

How to make hash
BHO concentrates tend to contain high amounts of terpenes and cannabinoids, although you will then need to get rid of all of the gas used in the process, which can be toxic.

Cook with Cannabis

Cannabis edibles are known for being one of the most healthy ways to consume cannabis, but it also happens to be the most potent method of consuming cannabinoids. Edibles take a bit longer to start taking effect (between 30 and 60 minutes) but once the effect starts, it’s much stronger than smoking or vaporizing.

For edibles or medibles to actually have a notable effect, you’ll need to decarb your cannabis or extracts. When you consume smoked or vaporizer marihuana, it’s decarbed by the heat produced, so you need to put it through a similar process before putting it into your food.

In order to make cannabis edibles you can easily use small buds of leftover trimmings. Some of the most used and highly recommended recipes are cannabis butter or cannabis syrup, as they can be added to plenty of real dishes for amazing results.

Be careful when consuming edibles

La Huerta Grow Shop highly recommends taking extreme care when dosing and eating cannabis edibles; if you go to far, you can have a pretty bad trip that can last for a few hours. We recommend going slowly and increasing your dose based on your tolerance level.

What is Decarbing Cannabis?

Cannabinoids can be incorporated into any food, but cannabis needs to be decarbed before you can ingest it properly. The decarbing process essentially changes THCa into THC. When you smoke or vape cannabis it gets decarbed with the heat from the fire or vaporizer but when ingesting you need to manually decarb it.

There are many recipes out there that don’t decarb the weed before using it, because while cooking the cannabis it partially decarboxylizes. However, you’re wasting a lot of cannabinoids doing this and it can lose flavour and effect. Keep in mind that terpenes are lost from 40°C onwards, and slow cooking is done from 65ۜ° onwards but you can add terpenes when cooking during cold processes to improve aroma, flavour and effect.

How do you decarb cannabis?

Let’s have a look at the necessary steps for decarbing cannabis.

In the oven:
  • You’ll need a tray and tin foil.
  • Place your cannabis on the tray and cover it with tin foil.
  • Place in the oven at about 100°C during approximately 30/45 minutes.
  • If you want to guarantee low temperatures we recommend using an oven thermometer that you can simply stick in the oven and keep an eye on.

This method has the slight inconvenience that it fills your house with a thick cannabis aroma.

*Important: we don’t recommend going over 140 degrees if you’re thinking of speeding up the process – all this will do is eliminate cannabinoids and terpenes.

Bain-marie Method

The best thing about this technique is that it doesn’t produce much of an aroma at all, so it’s a much more discreet way to decarb your cannabis. It’s great if you want to be as discreet as possible and you have nosy neighbours. It’s quite easy to do:

  • You’ll need a glass jar.
  • Place the cannabis inside.
  • Close the jar completely, wrap it in cling film for maximum efficiency.
  • Place the jar in boiling water for about an hour.
  • Remove it and let it cool down at room temperature, without opening it.

*Do not place it in cold water to cool it down or the glass will break.

Once your cannabis has been decarbed, you can use it to make butter, cookies, cakes or any cannabis recipe you can think of.

cannabis recipe
Decarbing cannabis before making edibles is necessary for potent effects.

Be Careful When Ingesting Cannabis

As we were saying earlier, ingesting cannabis edibles has quite a potent effect, more so than when smoked or vaped. This effect takes up to an hour, or more in some cases, to begin taking effect and it’s incredibly potent and long-lasting, so you’ll need to be careful when it comes to dosing and the amount you plan to consume.

The best way to do this is to start with a small amount and then increase the dose little by little until you find the right proportion. Evidently, cannabis isn’t always as strong in each and every strain. In order to dose your recipe properly you’ll need to have a decent idea of how much you need to ingest.

We recommend using butter to prepare dessert recipes; it can be stored in the freezer for much longer than biscuits, for example. Plus, it’s super easy to use, whether it’s with a simple piece of toast or by adding it to a recipe. We recommend adding the butter to a recipe or dessert without cooking it so that it doesn’t lose flavour or potency.

Butter is a great way to add cannabis to any recipe; you can mix it with ice cream, in pastries etc. If you plan on using it in a recipe that requires cooking, the best way to do this is on low heat to lose the least about of terpenes and cannabinoids possible.

How to Make Cannabutter

In order to make cannabutter you will need:

  • Water.
  • Normal butter (important that it includes fat).
  • Decarbed cannabis flowers or trimmings.

Proportions: Per 8 – 10g of flowers or 20 – 30g of trimmings you should use about 250ml water and 125g butter.

Prep:

  • Heat the water, the weed and the butter on low heat.
  • Let it boil softly for about a half an hour and then sieve the mix to separate the cannabis.
  • Pour it into a bowl or glass that does well with high temperatures.
  • Once it’s at room temperature, place it in the refrigerator for at least 6 hours.
  • Take it out of the fridge and make sure that the butter is floating up top and the water is on the bottom.
  • Remove the water and get your butter.
  • Store it in a separate container and put it in the fridge.

And lastly… Aromas and Flavours

Botanic terpene profiles offer characteristic aromas to each and every cannabis strain, and this discovery has opened many doors in the world of cannabis extracts and aromas.

You can add terpenes to cannabis foods and extracts in order to increase their aroma and flavor, from strains such as Super Lemon Haze, Jamaican Dream or Gelato.

Terpenes don’t contain cannabinoids but they can influence the effect produced by cannabinoids, producing an amazing aroma and flavour. All you have to do is add a small amount to whatever dish you have created or to your extract in order to give them the desired flavour and aroma.

Adding Terpenes to Concentrates

Cali Terpenes’ are the highest concentrated terpenes on the market. Just one drop of these terpenes (each ml has about 40 drops) is enough to add a decent amount of aroma and flavour to dry extracts, ice-o-lator, BHO, rosin, distilled extracts etc.

It’s highly important that you allow the concentrate to sit for a while, at least 24h, after adding the terpenes so that they can properly spread and change the hash slowly, little y little. Below you can find a tutorial video on how to add terpenes to rosin concentrates.

The Entourage Effect – Increases Potency

A flower, extract or cannabis edible without any terpenes (aromas) won’t only have less aroma and flavor, but they also produce a softer more standard effect. Each and every terpene profile (aromatic profile) from flowers and extracts allows cannabinoids to be more efficiently absorbed by consumers.

For example, if you compare two different cannabis extracts, both with the same THC and CBD ratios, and they both produce different effects – this is due to their terpene profile (the amount of terpenes in each strain). Terpenes can modify the effect produced by cannabinoids, which is known as the entourage effect.

This is why we always recommend using flowers or extracts that are rich in terpenes.

Cosmetic & Tinctures

As well as normal extracts and everything we mentioned earlier, you can also make tinctures and cosmetic products using your cannabis plant harvest.

From making your own serums, balms and tinctures with flowers and extracts and an olive oil base, to all types of creams that are ideal for alleviating various types of aches and pains.

At La Huerta Grow Shop you can find Cali Terpenes’ wide range of Terpenes, adding flavour and aroma to all types of extracts and e-liquid bases.
